
Studio Steen provides architectural services in the following stages:

Project Definition
We start by meeting to discuss the project's specifics and to define its scope. This information allows the writing of a contract and a vision statement.

Brief + Existing Conditions
Next, we gather information. We visit the project site, take photos and key measurements, and assess the site's topography, solar access, prevailing winds, and views. At the Studio, we assess the specific regulatory requirements of the site. We engage a qualified surveyor to produce a detailed survey of existing conditions, and, if needed, specialised consultants write additional reports, such as wastewater and bushfire assessments. All this information allows us to create a comprehensive brief and establish a budget.

​Schematic design
Schematic design involves exploring various design options that fit the brief, budget, and site characteristics, visualising layouts and forms in both plan and 3D. This phase concludes with the selection of a design for further refinement.

Design development
Once the schematic design is established, we develop the design focusing on structure and construction, materials and maintenance, fixtures and fittings. We collaborate with a structural engineer and any other necessary consultants, and begin working with quantity surveyors or builders to keep the project within budget and on schedule.

Planning
We take the finalised design through planning by writing and/or commissioning necessary reports, and developing a drawing set that meets council regulations. The stage is complete when we obtain planning permission.

Construction Documentation
Construction documentation entails the production and commission of all the documents and specifications necessary for a Building Application. This involves coordinating with engineers and energy assessors. A building permit allows construction to commence.
Tender
We prefer to have a builder ready for a project before we submit for Building Approval, however if a builder is not selected, we can prepare a tender package and coordinate getting up to three quotes for your project.

Construction
This phase encompasses periodic site visits scheduled at intervals established throughout the project. It also involves addressing inquiries from builders and contractors, along with overseeing general quality control.
